We feel pressure to \u201ccover\u201d every chapter, every vocab term, and every extension topic. But the reality is students don\u2019t need exposure to every chemistry concept. They need a strong understanding of the concepts that matter most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That realization completely changed the way I approached curriculum planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of trying to cram an entire college-level textbook into a high school course, I created curriculum maps built around layers of understanding. It helps answer questions like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What concepts are absolutely essential?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which topics support future science learning?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What can <em>realistically <\/em>be taught well within one school year?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Where can we slow down and give students time to truly learn?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without a map, it is easy to fall into survival mode\u2014teaching chapter to chapter without a clear sense of priorities. Curriculum mapping helps shift the focus from <em>coverage<\/em> to <em>understanding<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And honestly, there simply is not enough time to teach an entire chemistry textbook effectively. Between labs, interruptions, remediation, assessments, and filling learning gaps something has to give. Many curriculum teams do incredible work. However, I believe many have not had the opportunity to spend years in the classroom teaching the curriculum and seeing how it performs under real-world conditions\u2014different schedules, limited budgets, varying student abilities, and a wide range of learning styles.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That being said, after the first few years of teaching, I felt it was necessary to take a step back and determine what students were missing from year to year and what they absolutely needed to know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I sat down to redesign my curriculum, I started by identifying the concepts I believed every chemistry student should leave my classroom understanding. Topics include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lab Safety &amp; Procedure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Atomic structure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Periodic trends<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nomenclature &amp; Formulas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chemical reactions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stoichiometry<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gas laws<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chemical kinetics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Basic thermochemistry<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Core Map became my non-negotiable curriculum. Honors Chemistry connects those core concepts on a deeper level.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I already incorporate much of this in my Core Chemistry classes, but I use my Core Curriculum Map as my guide so the course stays on track and doesn&#8217;t become overly detailed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, I build my long-range plans around the Core Curriculum Map, but I may ask additional questions or tweak the way I ask those questions depending on each class. It&#8217;s about being intentional. When we stop trying to cover every page of the textbook, we gain the freedom to focus on the concepts that matter most. We create time for questions, critical thinking, labs, discussion, and retention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the end, our goal isn&#8217;t simply to help students survive chemistry.
