There\u2019s nothing more aggravating as a Chemistry teacher than planning an awesome lab\u2026 and having the reaction flop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019ve spent time prepping materials, reviewing safety procedures, and building excitement. Students are ready. Goggles are on. You give the signal\u2014and then\u2026 nothing. No color change. No bubbles. No reaction. Just 25 pairs of eyes staring at you, waiting for science to happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019ve been there, you know that feeling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s exactly why I test my chemistry labs first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s Not Just About Avoiding Failure<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Testing a lab ahead of time isn\u2019t about perfection\u2014it\u2019s about preparation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even when a lab \u201cshould\u201d work on paper, classroom variables can change everything:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  • Chemical concentrations may not be as expected<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Materials might be older or contaminated<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Timing might be off<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Instructions may not be as clear as you thought<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Running the lab yourself helps you catch these issues before your students do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Because once you\u2019re in front of a class, troubleshooting in real time is a lot harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It Helps You See What Students Will Actually Experience<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    When you test a lab, you\u2019re not just checking if it works\u2014you\u2019re stepping into your students\u2019 shoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    You start to notice things like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n
    • Where directions might be confusing<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Which steps take longer than expected<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Where students are likely to make mistakes<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • What questions are going to come up<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      This allows you to refine your instructions and anticipate confusion before it derails the lesson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      You Can Adjust Before It Matters<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      Testing your chemistry labs gives you the chance to tweak things like measurements and quantities, timing and pacing, group setup, and safety considerations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Sometimes it\u2019s a small fix\u2014like adjusting a concentration or rewriting a step. Other times, it\u2019s realizing the lab needs a backup plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Either way, it\u2019s much better to figure that out ahead of time than during class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      You Build Confidence (For You and Your Students)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      True Story: <\/strong>in my eighth year teaching, I had ordered brand new test tube clamps for our ring stands that still had the rubber grips attached. I set up the lab the day before, putting a test tube in each clamp and attaching them to the ring stand, adjusting each one so that the test tubes were tight and positioned at an angle.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The day of the lab, students began heating the substance in the tubes with their alcohol burners when the rubber grips caught on fire. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Since I had conducted this specific lab dozens of times, I didn\u2019t test it beforehand. Therefore, I wasn\u2019t thinking about the rubber grips and how high the flames might reach. Students were looking at me waiting for answers while tiny flames started appearing around the room at nearly every lab station. At that moment, I had two choices: panic or turn it into a teachable moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      My point is students can tell when something isn\u2019t going as planned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      When you\u2019ve tested your lab, you walk into the classroom with confidence. You know what should happen, what might go wrong, and how to respond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      That confidence matters. It keeps the lesson moving and helps maintain student trust\u2014even if something unexpected happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      And, trust me, no matter how many times you may have carried out a lab, there\u2019s always that chance it doesn\u2019t go quite as planned. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      You Still Need a Backup Plan<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      You may not want to hear it, but even with testing, labs don\u2019t always go perfectly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      That\u2019s why I always prep the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \n
      • A related demo (so students can at least visualize the expected results)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Photos or videos of how the lab should have gone<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • A discussion plan if things go sideways<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        Testing doesn\u2019t guarantee success\u2014but it dramatically increases the odds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        It\u2019s About Protecting the Learning Experience<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

        At the end of the day, testing labs isn\u2019t just about avoiding frustration\u2014it\u2019s about protecting student learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        A successful lab creates engagement, curiosity, and deeper understanding. A failed lab without prep can lead to confusion and missed opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        So, testing your labs first might feel like one more thing on your already full plate\u2014but it\u2019s one of the most impactful things you can do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Taking a little extra time beforehand ensures that when your students walk into the lab, they\u2019re set up for success\u2014not disappointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
